Belgium, Flanders & The Netherlands

In June of 2016 I was awarded a Visual Arts Fellowship and Residency at Dickinson House in Belgium. They are an amazing artist-led community in rural East Flanders, supporting writers, poets and artists. I spent two weeks there, working on drawings and small watercolour paintings, following which I traveled and continued drawing in Gent, Brussels and Amsterdam. This region of Europe is significant to me, because of my interest in Dutch and Flemish landscape drawings and prints, and the grand tradition of Franco-Belgian comics.

You can see the work I made on this trip in the posts below

Belgium – St. John’s Kirkyard

A double page book drawing which I worked on in Flanders, Amsterdam and finished in Edinburgh. The structure was inspired in part by St. John’s Kirkyard, however there is also iconography from a range of different places including Gent, Rural Flanders, Amsterdam. An ‘epic doodle’ including animals – cats, dogs, bats, pigeons, horses – and loads of different human characters and activities. Scroll down to see details.
